Background of the Study
Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with serious illnesses, focusing on providing relief from symptoms, pain, and stress. It is an essential component of healthcare that aims to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Nurses are integral to palliative care teams, often providing hands-on care, emotional support, and patient education. In Yobe State, Nigeria, palliative care services are underdeveloped, with limited training opportunities for nurses in this area (Bello & Abubakar, 2024).
The lack of awareness and proper training regarding palliative care poses a significant barrier to effective implementation. Nurses’ knowledge and attitudes toward palliative care influence the quality of care they provide. However, limited research has been conducted to assess nurses’ understanding and approach to palliative care in Yobe State. This study seeks to assess the knowledge and attitudes of nurses toward palliative care and identify strategies to improve the delivery of palliative care services.
Statement of the Problem
Nurses in Yobe State face numerous challenges in delivering effective palliative care due to inadequate training, limited resources, and cultural barriers (Aliyu et al., 2024). These barriers can lead to insufficient pain management, poor emotional support, and lack of proper end-of-life care for patients. There is a need to assess nurses’ knowledge of and attitudes toward palliative care to improve the quality of care provided to patients with life-limiting illnesses.
This study aims to assess the knowledge and attitudes of nurses toward palliative care in Yobe State and recommend strategies to improve palliative care services.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess nurses’ knowledge of palliative care in Yobe State.
2. To assess nurses’ attitudes toward palliative care.
3. To propose strategies for improving palliative care training and practice among nurses in Yobe State.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses regarding palliative care in Yobe State?
2. What are nurses’ attitudes toward palliative care in Yobe State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve palliative care delivery by nurses?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Yobe State have limited knowledge of palliative care.
2. Nurses have negative or indifferent attitudes toward providing palliative care.
3. Improving knowledge and attitudes through training will enhance the delivery of palliative care in Yobe State.
